Hold Your Tongue And Win

January 6

“But no man can tame the tongue.
It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
With it we bless our God and Father,
and with it we curse men
who have been made in the similitude of God.
Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing.
My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”
James 3:8-10

Probably one of the most difficult things to do is to keep our mouths shut. How many hurts, how much anger, how much bitterness, has been caused by the uncontrolled tongue. When you go to say a hateful thing, ask yourself what your goal is. If it’s to hurt someone, ask yourself WHY? Ask yourself what you hope to accomplish.

It will accomplish nothing good. It will evoke a response, but it will only prolong the animosity. Be the bigger person, stop the hostility with silence. Even better, say something nice to the person. That usually will disarm him.

But if not, leave the room. Take yourself out of the situation. And then take it one step further – pray for that person. Defeat the enemy by turning it to good.

If you can do that, you’ve won a huge victory.
