Useless Arguments

August 27

“But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes,
knowing that they generate strife,
and a servant of the Lord must not quarrel
but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,
in HUMILITY correcting those who are in opposition,
if God perhaps will grant them repentance,
so that they may know the truth…”
2 Timothy 2:23-25

When you find yourself in a disagreement with someone and an argument ensues, ask yourself whether this subject is worth arguing over. Most of the time arguing won’t change a thing but will put you at odds with that person. Be more willing to not engage than to further an unnecessary argument. It’s incredibly hard to do, because our emotions are strongly aroused when we’re arguing with someone. But the call to the follower of Christ is to control your emotions and control your tongue.

“For every kind of beast and bird,
of reptile and creature of the sea,
is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.
But no man can tame the tongue.
It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”
James 3:7-8

It takes the grace of God to enable us to stop an argument when we see it’s nothing but a heated exchange with people who not going to change their views. Do not feel that it’s your responsibility to win that person over, because it isn’t. Leave them with their view, that has to remain between them and God. As for you, back out.

If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man,
able also to bridle the whole body.

Most of us are NOT “a perfect man.” We live in a fallen human nature and when that is aroused, all hell can break loose. Let it stop with you. Don’t insist on having the last word. Leave, in all humility – remembering that you represent Christ before the world.
