Don’t Be Taken Captive

August 29

“Have I not written to you excellent things
of counsels and knowledge,
that I may make you know
the certainty of the words of truth,
that you may answer words of truth
to those who send to you?”
Proverbs 22:20-21

The Word of God is full of excellent resources, of wisdom, of counsel and of knowledge, but knowledge of the Word of God is sadly lacking in society today. I saw a statistic which said that among professing Christians only 10% have read the Bible through. That is just appalling. It’s shameful.

Man is not born with wisdom, and wisdom is not acquired by the resources of the world which actually are often deceiving. The source of wisdom is the Word of God. It is certain, it is sure. But it takes effort. One must take the Scriptures and feed in it every day, asking for enlightenment. To the one who does this, it will be given.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ASK of God,
who gives to all liberally and without reproach,
and it will be given to him.”
James 1:5

To anyone who does not feed in God’s Word, they are on their own. They have no source that is reliably true, they have only the “philosophies of the world” to guide them, and those will only lead them astray. Truth is found only in the Word of God.

BEWARE lest any man take you captive
through philosophy and vain deceit,
after the tradition of men,
after the rudiments of the world,
and not after Christ.”
Colossians 2:8

When the Word of God says “BEWARE,” it is stressing the importance of it. Pay attention. It is saying there’s great danger here. Beware!

You feed your body; do not neglect to feed your soul.
