His Mercy Endures Forever

June 3

“Fools, because of their transgression,
and because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
Their soul abhorred all manner of food,
and they drew near to the gates of death.
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them out of their distresses.
He sent his word and healed them,
and delivered them from their destructions.
Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord
for his goodness, and for his wonderful works
to the children of men!”

Psalm 107:17-21

“Fools…”

Many times, the trouble we find ourselves in is trouble we brought upon ourselves. Whether it be through sin, or through unwise choices, we know we have only ourselves to blame. This can bring about such guilt, such shame, such self-hatred, that we hold back from crying out to God because we think he won’t hear us because of the depth of our sin.

But God is abundant in mercy and compassion, and when we cry out to him he does not recite to us the riot act and recount to us how we brought it all upon ourselves. He knows us, he understands our humanity, and that we live in a fallen world and often make mistakes, and he stands with forgiveness, mercy and healing.

The last two lines of this Psalm is repeated four times throughout the Psalm and when God repeats something, it is for emphasis:

“Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord
for his goodness, and for his wonderful works
to the children of men!”

Come to him. He will not cast you out. He will receive you and begin the process of healing, his wonderful works – toward you.
